Introduction

As Indian citizens, we are generally a wary and vigilant bunch when it comes to hailing autorickshaw rides. Auto drivers are known to be predatory in nature and have been taking advantage of customers for years together, there’s nothing much left to be said about the few subtle differences in methodology of scamming between two different Indian cities. The modus operandi largely remains the same; outrightly refusing to go by the meter, harassing customers to pay a certain amount of money on top of the meter fare, outright refusal to ply to a certain area, fighting on the way for extra fare even after settling on a fare prior to the trip, taking longer routes to increase the fare on the meter, and much much more.

But the ways and means by which autorickshaw drivers can scam passengers and take them for a ride are constantly evolving. So as passengers, we consequently need to step up our vigilance game too by keeping our eyes and ears peeled open for new angles in which they can potentially take advantage of us.
