Social media has been perverted and corrupted irrepairably by none other than the creators themselves. It's become nothing but a vanity mirror where you can see whatever your friends have purchased and get pressured to do the same. It's bad enough we feel peer pressure to buy unnecessary stuff when our friends show them off online.

Now we don't even need our friends to brag and show off online in order to get us to buy something, because that's what targeted ads are for!
