Unfortunately the first line of thinking has been pervasive for years, only until recently when millennials have seen each and every marker of standard of living go lower and lower. and on top of that we're somehow expected to roll with the same curveballs dealt to boomers, but with the addition of 99 other problems of the modern age that we're forced to deal with.
